It’s the Spirit who gives life; the flesh accomplishes nothing. The words that I (Jesus) have spoken to you are spirit and life. John 6:63 (isv)
Nothing we do on our own will ever impress God (Psalm 16:2, Job 22:2, 37:5, Rom 11:35). Only by accepting God’s plan of salvation through His son Jesus are we made righteous and spiritually alive in God’s eyes (2 Cor 5:21, Rom 3:22, 10:1-3). 😇 Without Jesus, everyone is spiritually dead (John 14:6, Eph 2:1, 1 John 3:14). 😔
Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. Hab 3:17-18 (isv)
Joy is a choice! One which cannot be made without the Holy spirit’s help (Gal 5:22, Rom 5:11, 14:17, 15:13, Psalm 16:11, 51:12). 😊 But, to have access to the Holy spirit, one must first accept God’s plan for entry into His kingdom: by believing in His son Jesus as the resurrected savior (Rom 5:3, 5:9-10, 10:9, 10:13, John 3:3, 14:6, Job 13:15). 😇 Practice joy today by rejoicing in the Lord!
Without prophetic vision (Biblical truth), people abandon restraint, but those who obey the Law are happy. Pro 29:18 (isv)
Where Divine revelation, and the faithful preaching of the sacred testimonies (Biblical truths), are neither reverenced nor attended, the ruin of that land is at no great distance (Clarke). Very striking in the midst of ethical precepts is this recognition of the need of a yet higher teaching (God), without which morality passes into worldly prudence or degenerates into casuistry (Barnes). Essentially, when our rulers care only for themselves and the wealthy and when the church fails to preach God’s truth; society will decay. (Amos 8:11, Pro 11:14, 14:34, 24:24, Isa 5:20). ☹️
Now would be a good time to pray for a spiritual awakening in our country . 😔
Whom do I have in heaven but you? I desire nothing on this earth. Psalm 75:25 (isv)
If we truly love God then on what is our mind focused (Col 3:2, Matt 6:19-21)? Is there really anything in this life that is worth more than the heavenly treasures God has promised (Phil 3:8, John 17:3, 1 Cor 2:9)? So, keep your mind focused on Jesus and things above (Isa 26:3, Rom 8:5, 14:19, 1 Cor 2:9, 2 Cor 4:18)! 😊
Humble yourselves in the Lord’s presence, and he will exalt you. James 4:10 (isv)
God asks so little from us (Micah 6:8, Matt 6:23, 1 Samuel 15:22, Luke 10:27). Pride and arrogance are things God despises since they are satanic attributes which are diametrically opposed to God (Pro 6:17, Mark 7:22-23, Psalm 10:4, 1 John 2:16-17). If we are not focused on God’s greatness (humility), then we are focused on our own greatness (pride). 😌
To focus our minds on the human nature leads to death, but to focus our minds on the Spirit leads to life and peace. Rom 8:6 (Isv)
The sense is, that to follow the inclinations of the flesh, or the corrupt propensities of our nature (natural passions), leads us to condemnation and death (eternal) (Barnes). This means those who choose to live only for themselves and their own pleasures are dead (eternally) (Pro 14:12, Rom 1:32, 2:8, 7:5, 8:8, 1 John 2:16). But, those who choose life (eternal) will focus only on Jesus and His word (Rom 6:16, 6:23, 5:12, Matt 4:4, John 6:35, Phil 4:7). One would think this choice is a no-brainer: heaven or hell. But, people will still choose the latter (2 Tim 4:3-4, Jude 1:18). So choose well today: your eternal soul is at stake. 🤔
And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. Rom 8:28 (net)
We may not like what’s happening to us (2 Cor 12:25). We may not understand why it’s happening (1 Cor 2:11, Psalm 73:16-17). But, God will use it to mold our character into something more Christ-like (2 Peter 3:28, Matt 11:29, 2 Cor 3:18). This should be the goal of every Christian (Phil 3:14). So, we need to keep trusting that God knows better than we do (Psalm 25:4, 119:27). 🙂
…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Phil 2:12b (kjv)
This is an exortation not only to Christians but non-Christians as well. It is the DUTY or choice of everyone to be concerned about their own salvation or with whom they will spend eternity. Eternity is a very long time. … It is a duty because it is our own personal interest that is at stake. No one else has, or can have, as much interest in our (own) salvation as we have (Barnes commentary). Considering the difficulty of the work, and the danger of miscarriage (hell): If you do not watch, pray and continually depend on God, your enemy (satan) will surprise you, and your light and life will become extinct; (Clarke commentary). There are only two choices in life: God or satan. And every day, everyone is choosing one or the other (Josh 24:14, Deut 11:26-28). 🤔 So, choose carefully. There is a lot more at stake than most people know.
For we are God’s masterpiece, created in the Messiah Jesus to perform good actions that God prepared long ago to be our way of life. Eph 2:10 (isv)
Are our actions truly God’s will or are we doing our own will; what we think is good? (Matt 7:21-23) Everything we say and do should be to: * edify others (Rom 14:19, Eph 4:12, 4:29, 1 Thess 5:11), * glorify God (1 Peter 2:12, Matt 5:16), * and to promote His kingdom (1 Cor 14:12, Eph 4:16, Rom 15:6, 1 Cor 6:20). 😊 Study these verses well so you will be prepared when satan tries to distract you from doing what God wants you to do. 🤔
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 2 Tim 3:5 (kjv)
Opposing the real power of (the Holy spirit); not allowing it to exert any influence in their lives (Barnes commentary). Just because someone claims to be a follower of Jesus doesn’t mean they are (Rom 16:17, 2 Thess 3:2, Matt 7:16, Eph 5:11). 😟 All you need to do is check their fruit (Matt 7-20, Rom 6-21, Gal 5:22, Eph 5:9).
Isn’t this what we think when we lose control; when things don’t go our way? God strips us of the things we often hold so tightly so that we may learn to receive His blessings by grace rather than trying to grasp them for ourselves. “Today Devotional”, By Joel Vande Werken — 10-21-20. As Christians, we would not have this exasperation if we wholly trust in Jesus to handle all our problems (Pro 3:5, Psalm 37:5, 62:8, Isa 12:2, 26:3). 😊
…by casting all your cares on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7b (net)
Who is better to handle all your problems, you or God? Since we, as Christians, have direct access to God why not let Him worry about these things (Psalm 55:22, Matt 6:25, Phil 4:6, 1 Tim 6:8, Heb 13:5). Remember these verses and let them comfort you as you face the trials of this world. 😌
So the LORD has cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed in a single day. The elder and the dignitary is the head, and the prophet (preacher) who teaches lies is the tail. Isa 9:14-15 (isv).
God makes sure that the two major motivators of Israel’s spiritual decline, the religious and political leadership, would feel His wrath first (“The Berean”, 10-19-20). This also applies to our country and its Christian and political leaders (Gal 6:7, Isa 5:20, 5:23, 13:11, 29:20, Micah 2:1, Pro 17:15, 24:24). A sad indictment against this country. 😟
The person who keeps His commandments abides in God, and God abides in him. This is how we can be sure that he remains in us: he has given us His Spirit. 1 John 3:24 (isv)
There are only two choices in life, God or satan. If we truly love God and choose to follow Jesus then we must obey His commands (John 14:21-23, 15:10, 1 John 4:15). God only gave us two commandments: love God and love others (1 John 2:3, 4:7, 4:12, 4:16, 5:3, Matt 22:37-39, John 8:42, 13:34, 14:15). 🤔 It doesn’t get any easier, but everyday everyone is choosing one or the other with whom they will spend eternity (Joshua 24:15). 😟
…I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me. John 5:30b (isv)
If we have chosen to follow Jesus then we can only please God by becoming like Jesus and submitting entirely to God’s will instead of our own will (1 John 2:6, John 13:15, 1 Peter 2:21, Phil 2:5, Matt 11:29, 20:28, Eph 4:23). 😇
Look! The days are coming,” declares the Lord GOD, “when I will send a famine throughout the land— not a famine of food or a thirst for water— but rather a famine of hearing the words of the LORD (TRUTH). Amos 8:11 (isv)
The first victims of this famine are the young. They are more susceptible because their parents failed to provide a solid foundation of truth. The young only know what the older generation has taught them. With anything remotely Christian being banished from public schools and colleges and ridiculed in the media, and with churches increasingly neglecting the Word of God, the youth are being supplied with a very weak or non-existent diet of truth (“The Berean”, 10-18-20). There is only one truth and that is God and His word (1 John 1:5, John 17:17, Matt 4:4). Truth and lie are mutually exclusive. But, because truth reveals one’s poor choices, sinful nature and spiritual nakedness, people would choose to believe a lie (which conceals these things) rather than truth (Romans 1:18-20, 1:28-32, Pro 1:7, 2 Tim 4:3-4, John 3:19-21). This is a sad indictment against this country (Isaiah 5:20-24, Pro 17:15, Mal 2:17 ). ☹️
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Matt 23:12 (isv)
Those who brag about themselves, who boast of their brilliance, who think they know more than those who are highly trained in their field, or those who disdain advice from others are ruled by their own pride. God says they are nothing (Gal 6:3, Psalm 62:9, Pro 6:17, 29:23, James 4:10). If they are nothing in God’s eyes, why would we make them something in our eyes? 😏
To focus our minds on the human nature leads to death, but to focus our minds on the Spirit leads to life and peace. Romans 8:6 (isv)
As Christians, upon what will we focus our thoughts; the trials we struggle with, the temptations we experience, the fears and lies espoused by others, or will we keep our minds steadfastly focused on Jesus and His word? (2 Cor 10:5-6, Matt 15:19, 16:23, 1 Peter 1:14-15, Pro 3:5-6, Eph 4:17) 😊
And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. Luke 1:6 (kjv)
As we walk the Christian path, we have been told to follow God’s rules and commands. We don’t get to choose which rules we will follow and the ones we will overlook. “Bible League Int”, 10-14-20, (1 Sam 15:22, Pro 21:3, 1 John 5:3). Doing so makes us righteous in God’s eyes (1 John 2:6, 1 Peter 2:21, 1 Cor 1:30). 😇
Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. Psalm 34:11 (isv)
What is the “fear” of the Lord? With respect to the spiritual, “fear” in the Greek (G5399) is – to reverence, venerate, to treat with deference or reverential obedience. God wants us to worship only Him (Joshua 24:15, 1 Kings 18:21, Matt 22:37, Luke 4:8). We are to trust God completely (Pro 3:5, Psalm 62:8) and not put our trust in a human (Psalm 118:8-9, Jer 17:5, 17:7). Godly fear is one of a deep and abiding respect that grows as we learn—from within a continuing, intimate relationship—of His character, His purpose, and His powers: (John W. Ritenbaugh, “The Berean”, 10-12-20).
So, keep trusting God no matter what the situation. 😊
…but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. Matt 20:22b (kjvlite)
How can we endure to the end? Remembering that our lives are very short compared to eternity is one way. (Psalm 78:39, Job 14:1) Rejoicing always is another way to endure to the end. ( 1 Thess 5:18, Psalm 33:1) Trusting that God is in control and remembering what Jesus went through for us will also help us endure to the end (James 4:14, 1 Cor 10:13, Heb 12:2, Phil 2:8, Luke 24:26, Prov 3:5). Always keep in mind that this too shall pass. So never give up, Never surrender! 😆
And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:7 (net)
True peace comes only from God.
But for that to happen we need to cast all of our cares on Him and trust Him completely; just as a small child trusts its parents, especially in these troubled times (Phil 4:6, Psalm 55:22, Matt 6:25, 1 Peter 5:7, Luke 12:22, Pro 3:5). 😌
I burn with indignation because of the wicked who forsake your instruction. Psalm 119:53 (isv)
The very sight and sound of evil should disgust our spirit. God hates evil and He wants His children to hate it as well (Isa 61:8, Hosea 9:15, Psalm 97:10, Amos 5:14, Rom 16:17, Eph 5:11, 1 Thess 5:22, 2 Tim 2:19). This is why we are expected to guard our minds and spirits (Phil 4:7, 2 Peter 3:17, Pro 4:23, Luke 12:15, 21:34). 🥴
